Radical Revision

  • Gloucester Writers Center 126 East Main Street Gloucester, MA, 01930 United States (map)

A lot of good poems and essays get lost in revision and never find their way back. It's true what we take apart doesn't always get put back together, or at least put back together very well. Revision has stayed such a perennial topic of lectures, workshops, discussions, panels, etc. because of how close we feel to our own work, how visceral the editing process can get. It's not hard to become myopic - or at least frustratingly romantic - with some of our initial drafts. Equally vexing can be a desire to want to reenter, re-capture, re-imagine our work, but feel we lack the tools to do so and not get ... well, lost. Let's see what we can do about all this, shall we? In this craft-informed, generative workshop we'll explore various forms of radical revision - how it can liberate you, inspire you, and provide new perspectives on both your old work and your work to come. Potential list of poets whose work might come up include llya Kaminsky, Ada Limon, and Elizabeth Bishop.
